Note: This online training is in place of the in-person training originally planned for June 2020 and then provisionally postponed to February 2021. With the continuing uncertainty around covid19 and the impact that is having on planning, travel and budgets, we hope this model of training will be more accessible to teams for lower cost and less risk.

Grant writing, accessing funds from appropriate donors both locally and internationally, has never been more important or more challenging. Through a model of facilitated peer learning this training will guide teams through the various aspects of grant writing, providing space and time for teams to consider the theory and context of grant writing and to put this into practice as they work on their own grant proposal.

The training facilitation team will provide structure, organisation, input and support, but ultimately the training is built on the foundation of peer support, feedback and sharing. It is our expectation that significant benefit will come from engaging in a community that is going through the same process together - learning from one another’s successes/strengths and challenges/weaknesses.

The training will be delivered over a period of 11 months, using a mix of both synchronous (at the same, set time) and asynchronous (at a time convenient for you) activities, including online calls, team activities, videos and presentations. Being online you will be able to have up to five staff join the training for a flat registration fee of $400 and by the end of the training, you will have produced a completed concept note based on your context and chosen activities.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the training, participants will:

  1. understand the different factors that influence funder’s decision making and be equipped to evaluate which funding opportunities might be suitable for their situation,

  2. understand the key features and requirements of grant writing and assess how well their organization is equipped to engage in the process,

  3. understand how to write up a project proposal in a professional, attractive and engaging way,

  4. have produced the key components of a project grant proposal to be developed into a full proposal for a specific funder,

And, within six months of completing the training, teams will have submitted at least one funding proposal.

Training Structure:

Each month you will be introduced to a new aspect of grant writing and given the opportunity to work as a team on developing one section of a grant proposal, before giving feedback on another team’s proposal and receiving feedback on your own. The format of the monthly cycle will be as follows:

Week 1 - Your team will take part in a group video online call (90min) introducing the focus topic for the month and outlining the grant proposal task for the month.

Week 2 - As a team you will work independently on the grant proposal section in focus, and submit your response to the facilitation team and your assigned peer team.

Week 3 - As a team you will review one another’s grant proposal sections and then share your reflections and questions with the peer team and the facilitation team.

Week 4 - As a team you will watch a short summary video provided by the facilitation team, reviewing some of the key aspects of this month’s topic. You will then review the comments you received from your assigned peer team and facilitator, and revise your proposal based on these.

The monthly synchronous online calls will take place on the following dates, which are all Thursdays, at 6pm Bangkok time: 14 Jan, 11 Feb, 11 Mar, 8 Apr, 6 May, 17 June, 15 July, 12 August, 9 September, 7 October.

Below is a table demonstrating the training cycle, using January as an example:
